The Best Madrid Markets
Madrid’s best food Markets have recently been reformed to not only include food-stands, but also for social gatherings including bars or Madrid tapas stands where locals meet up, especially at weekends. In Madrid there are 46 markets and 2063 food stands. At Native Spanish Tapas we want to show the Best Madrid Markets so you can enjoy your time in Madrid like a real local does. There are so many Markets in Madrid, but we have chosen five must-sees, they are not in any particular order either…
- Mercado de San Miguel
Mercado de San Miguel is located in the historical city center next to 1600´s Plaza Mayor. It has been around for over 100 years. Its original skeleton structure was built in iron and they managed to preserve during its restoration. The unique thing about this market is that there are mainly Madrid style tapas food-stands; we call like to refer to it like some type of tapas food-court. The unique thing is that you can order a wine in one stand and walk on over to another stand, order a tapa, and the vendor won’t say anything. This beautiful Madrid market is considered a top-notch one, so it is a bit pricier than most, but well worth the experience.
- Mercado de San Antón
The Mercado de San Antón is on the list of one the best Madrid markets, located in Madrid’s LGBT neighborhood. It is very unique because downstairs is designated for only food stands where the second floor has some of the best Madrid tapas around, and a roof-top terrace space with two restaurants and a cocktail bar to enjoy some of the best Madrid tapas and spectacular views of the city center.
- Mercado Barceló
The Mercado Barceló restoration was finished in 2016 at the artsy Malasaña neighborhood and is also considered as one of best Madrid markets. It is rather immense with five floors, all a have a wide variety of traditional food-stands, tapas-stands and arts & crafts stands too. It is a clear reflection of the neighborhood itself, a very common evening meeting-point for some of the best Madrid tapas.
- Mercado de Maravillas
Mercado de Maravillas is located in the working class neighborhood of Cuatro Caminos and definitely a local favorite, it is considered for some as the best Madrid market, for a simple reason that it is the biggest food market in Europe! It boasts some 189 stands with some of the freshest meats, fruit, cheeses, cold-cuts, bakeries, besides over a dozen traditional Madrid tapas bars. If you want to get a feel of how locals buy there fresh-produce, this is the Madrid market for you.
- Mercado Platea
The Mercado Platea is located in the up-scale Salamanca neighborhood; it was originally a cinema but reformed as a Madrid market in 2016. It’s distributed among five floors with traditional and more cuisine gourmet stands, but it is the crème of the crème of the best Madrid markets because it houses very exclusive restaurants such as two star Michelin restaurant from renowned chef Ramón Freixa.
