No one could imagine that is amazing open air square, with its light red facades and avenues sprouting out was the center of trade and other official ceremonies. The first bull-fights in Madrid took place in the Plaza Mayor. Renowned painter Francisco de Goya depicted these events in some of his drawings, which can be seen at the Prado Musuem.
Today, Madrid locals adore the Plaza Mayor, it’s a place to meet up and enjoy a full day of Spanish tapas in Madrid with friends or family, where great conversations spark up at many of the terraces and side-bars the square is known for. Locals also go to the Plaza Mayor for the traditional calamari sandwich. Calamari sandwich?, Madrid does not have a coast! Madrid is one of the biggest consumers of fish in Spain, boasting the biggest fish-market where fresh fish is brought in daily from all the fishing coasts that Spain has.
Another unforgettable event is the Christmas market held here in the month of December. The square turns into a Christmas celebration with stands selling adornments or the Christmas tree or for the traditional Nativity-set.
