Madrid Mercado de San Miguel
Madrid’s Mercado de San Miguel, is a amazing place for delicious Madrid tapas , Native Spanish Tapas recommends our clients to make a stop there. In fact, during our Madrid walking tours or our Madrid tapas tour, we make a stop right in front of it, explaining the history of it what it is today. That is what we are going to talk about today; el Mercado de San Miguel.
In 1916, the Mercado de San Miguel was built on the grounds of an old church with the same name. Its beautiful iron cage-like structure really makes it a unique Market in Madrid.
It suffered a lot of aging through the years and was half abandoned, until 1999, when the Community of Madrid, decided to carry out a series of reforms in order to revive this historical icon in the heart of Madrid. But times had changed, and people started shopping at corporate supermarkets instead of your local grocer stands. It started to decline again.
In 2009, the San Miguel Gastronomical Society re-opened its doors. The mission was to promote the concept of going out for tapas in Madrid in a closed space, Madrid tapas are considered to be some of the best in Spain. It seems the idea has worked. During our Madrid walking tours, our customers who have gone to the Mercado de San Miguel have great opinions about it, of course, it is a bit pricy, and after all, it was indented for tourists. The unique aspect I tell our Madrid tapas tour customers, is that all the stands share all the cutlery and silver-ware. You can grab a drink in one stand, go to another standing placing the drink right at the bar and ordering a bite to eat, or a second round…
Native Spanish tapas wants to make sure you have the utmost fun during you stay in Madrid, we recommend joining us in one of our many Madrid tapas tours.
